According to Fuelly, the last time I filled the tank of the GTI was 4/18 (until today) , which shows how little I drove while working from home. That meant that last weekend was when I discovered that I no longer have Sirius XM satellite radio, but I am not sure when it actually got cut off.

Kinja'd!!!

I bought the car 4 years ago Memorial Day weekend. After 3 months I expected satellite radio to shut off. I liked it, but wasn’t willing to pay the typical post-intro rates and didn’t want to fight every 6 months for a lower rate. So I was surprised when it didn’t go away.

I had free satellite radio for 4 years.

Somebody finally noticed, apparently. Or maybe it got set to shut off after 48 months instead of 3, somehow. Or maybe the lack of use made something reset, and it realized that I didn’t have a paid subscription.

I enjoyed satellite radio, so much that getting it for free was a factor in not replacing the GTI whenever I had a wild idea for a replacement. It was a nice feature on long road trips, as my wife and I could listen to “story” type programming, which is our preferred thing to stay awake and engage each other. I also found some new music on various channels that I probably won’t come across now.

I may pay for it on the Outback if we are planning a long road trip, but it is the end of an era for satellite radio in my GTI, now that the free ride is over.

They are running a 4-month free trial right now.  You just have to remember to cancel in October.

Reminds me of a client I have for my side computer work business..

Gentleman has an ISP-provided email address (let’s call them WestConnection) in Apple Mail on his iMac. He switched providers to....let’s call them Buzzer...like 2 years ago. Despite cancelling his WestConnection account and having NO services (TV, phone or internet) with WestConnection anymore, his WestConnection email address is still active and functional....he doesn’t use it anymore, but he left it on his Ap ple Mail just to see what kind of still still comes in there, lol.

Every once in a while free weekends kick in for the radio in my Sportwagen I enjoy it. I find myself listening to mostly the broadway channel, like yourself not enough to pay for it though.

kind of like I haven’t paid for a car and driver subscription for at least 5 years but they keep sending me magazines, even with the little letter that says it will be my last one. I’ve got a stack of those.

Did you play the “I’m not going to change the channel” game “because it might trigger the end of the signal?”

Nah, I had the channels I liked programmed and never really had any need to change the programming . I’d switch back and forth pretty regularly between channels .

I’ve been driving my “fun cars” almost exclusively since quarantine started. I’ve put less than ten miles on my daily driver since March. It’s actually worked out economically I guess since both fun things burn premium and the DD is a diesel. I’ve been able to take advan tage of the low gas prices while diesel has stayed fairly high.

More like “E nd of an err”...

In any event, I’m still annoyed the that government let Sirius and XM merge.

For some reason in my R, the traffic and weather alerts package is active in Sirius from the previous owner , but the radio channels aren’t. Kinda wish it was the other way around. lol.

My wife fought for the intro price for awhile. Then she got a new Soul without satellite capabilities . She loved it and would be paying for it

I also have free Sirius in my GTI! I got the car 2 years ago and it still works. Honestly, at this point, I like it so much that I might even pay for it if they turn it off.

I wonder if this is a Volkswagen specific thing. Guess I’ll have to confirm mine still works when I go to lunch today.

Sat radio subscriptions , one of life’s great mysteries.

Had em die after 3 months, last the life of the car. I also have a floor model from circuit city that is at least 12-13 years old that is still kicking!

Maybe it was a 48 month introduction for VW at that time, but I certainly didn’t think so. Hope yours lasts another 2 years!
